Breakdown

Levels Divide out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot is a classic Cover 2 beater built on a two-level stretch to the outside. To the left, the outside receiver runs a deep in breaking route across the middle while the slot receiver underneath runs a corner route that climbs vertically before breaking outside, creating a natural levels stack that isolates any single defender in that flat-to-intermediate zone. On the right side the play sends two verticals up the seams and sideline while the H-back releases into the flat off a check release, giving the quarterback a divide concept to attack the opposite hash if the left side is capped. The primary read starts left with the underlying corner route into the deep in, then progresses to the two verticals on the right side against zone shells that flow away from the initial read.

Defensive Reads

As the defense, key the slot receiver at the snap since his corner route is the trigger for the levels stack and if he sits down early it usually means he is settling into a curl against zone. Watch the cornerback over the outside receiver running the deep in, if he bails into a deep zone drop instead of playing man technique it signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and the underneath defender must widen to the corner route or the levels concept will pick him apart. On the right side, track the middle linebacker or nickel defender responsible for the flat since a slow read there lets the H-back check release cleanly into open grass. Man coverage with no help over the top is the biggest liability against this play, so if the defense shows Cover 1 or Cover 0 pressure looks, expect the offense to attack the deep in route immediately with no read progression needed. To shut this down, disguise a Cover 3 look with the flat defender sinking under the corner route while a deep third defender stays over the top of the deep in, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and check it down to the right side verticals into a crowded zone.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the corners are aligned soft or press since the corner route on the left needs a clean release to threaten the flat defender vertically before breaking. Look for two high safeties before the snap, that shell tells you the deep in over the top and the divide verticals to the right are both live because the underneath defender cannot cover both levels on the left. Use the flat control adjustment on the H-back if you see the strong safety cheating down to rob the corner route, since that opens an easy checkdown against blitz looks. Best called on second and medium to second and long when defenses sit in zone to protect the sticks, since the deep in and corner combo consistently wins against Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells. Pair this with Curls or Digs H Option from the same set to keep the defense honest on levels concepts, then hit them with Four Verticals once they start jumping the deep in route.
