Z Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot sends the Z receiver on a shallow drag underneath from the boundary all the way across the field while the slot and TE stack vertical patterns on the strong side, one settling into a deep out and the other climbing to a corner route up the sideline. The two outside receivers on the weak side both run comeback-style stop routes, breaking outside after selling vertical stems to give the quarterback a quick underneath answer. This is a man beater at its core, using the shallow crosser to create natural rub traffic against man defenders while the deep corner and out routes stretch zone defenders vertically and horizontally, so it also holds up against zone drops that overcommit to the underneath crosser. The primary read starts with the shallow cross underneath since it clears against man coverage almost immediately, then progresses to the deep out from the slot and finally to the corner route if the safety bites down on the shallow.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, since a linebacker who sinks immediately into the shallow crosser's lane signals zone coverage and tells you to work the deep out or corner route instead. Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, because Cover 1 and Cover 3 leave the shallow cross wide open against man defenders who trail from the backside. Key the flow of the middle linebacker post snap, since a fast trigger toward the shallow cross often means a user spy or lurk defender is sitting underneath, which should push your eyes immediately to the corner route breaking behind him. Look for a two high safety shell pre-snap as a warning sign, because Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells put a safety in position to jump the deep out route and can bait you into a costly throw. Recognize blitz packages by counting box defenders before the snap, since a nano blitz or overload pressure look means the shallow cross becomes your checkdown outlet and must be thrown before the pocket collapses.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing man coverage before the snap, since the shallow cross is most explosive when it pulls a man defender into traffic.
Check the middle of the field for a single high safety versus two high, because Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells let the shallow cross work fastest while true Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells force you to progress to the deep out and corner routes.
Hot route the backside comeback into a hitch or speed out if you are facing aggressive outside corners playing press, since that gives you an instant answer without needing to work through the full progression.
This play is best on second and medium to third and short since the shallow cross alone can pick up first down yardage against blitzes, but the corner route gives you an explosive shot option on early downs.
Pair this call with Mesh or Y Shallow Cross earlier in the drive to condition the defense to sit on shallow crossers, then hit Four Verticals or Deep Attack off the same formation to punish linebackers who cheat underneath.
