Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth: stacked or blitzing linebackers are a green light since they will overrun the play and open cutback lanes. Watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting in the middle of the field pre-snap, since that defender can read the draw and blow it up before it develops. Post-snap, key the defensive line's pursuit angles; if the line stays disciplined and does not crash upfield, the draw has nowhere to go. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers pulls extra defenders away from the box, making this an effective man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, look for linebackers dropping into short zones rather than blitzing, since that keeps them in position to read and tackle the draw quickly.

Call this on early downs or after showing multiple pass plays from the same Spread Y-Slot personnel to keep defenses guessing run versus pass.
Use it against defenses that bring pressure or blitz heavy, since the delayed handoff exploits linebackers flowing upfield.
Avoid calling this against spy defenders or contain based defensive fronts that keep linebackers at home, since the delay gives them time to read and fill.
