Y Cross out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot sends the Y (slot TE) on a deep crossing route from right to left that cuts underneath the vertical route from the left outside receiver, while the left slot receiver runs a corner route and the right outside receiver runs a deep out breaking toward the sideline. The HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline to stress the flat defender and any late-rotating safety. This is a man beater at its core, since the Y Cross creates natural rub traffic against man defenders trailing across the field, but it also has zone answers against Cover 3 and Cover 4 thanks to the crosser sitting down in the void behind linebackers and in front of deep zone defenders. The primary read progression starts with the Y crosser working left to right, then to the HB wheel if the crosser is taken away, with the corner route as a deep shot option if the safety bites down.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks too deep into a zone drop the crosser will find soft grass immediately underneath him. Key the play side cornerback leverage before the snap, tight man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal look for the Y crosser to separate. Track the flat defender or nickel corner reaction to the HB wheel release, a blitzing defense that vacates the flat area leaves the wheel wide open for an explosive gain. Identify two high safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4, since these coverages allow a safety to sink and rob the crossing route, making the deep corner or comeback route better answers in that situation. Look for a user controlled defender spying the middle of the field or shading toward the crosser, this signals a lurk read where you should peek to the wheel or vertical route instead of forcing the ball across the field.
Usage Tips
Read the middle of the field pre snap to determine if you are facing single high or two high safeties, since Y Cross thrives against single high man coverage where the crosser can outrun a defender trailing across the formation.
If you see Cover 3 with a sitting linebacker in the middle zone, be ready to check the ball down quickly to the HB wheel or use the crosser as a hole shot before the underneath defender can settle.
Hot route the outside vertical route into a deep comeback or hitch against soft zone shells if the cornerback is playing off coverage, this keeps the defense honest and opens the crosser lane even more.
Use Y Cross on early down and distance situations, first and ten or second and medium, to keep defenses guessing between run and pass while still having a home run shot with the wheel route.
Pair this play with Curls or Digs H Option in your play calling sequence, since both plays show similar Shotgun spread alignment but attack different levels, forcing linebackers to respect multiple crossing patterns.
