Breakdown

Y Cross is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot that isolates the Y (TE) on a deep crossing route from the backside of the formation, giving him a full field crosser that settles behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties. The two receivers to the left run a vertical clear out and a deep out that stretches the defense horizontally, while the right side runs a corner route and a flat release out of the backfield to hold the flat defender. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the natural rub and separation the Y Cross generates against man coverage, though it also has zone beating traits since the crosser sits in soft spots between zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser (Y), works to the corner route on the right if the crosser is taken away, and checks down to the flat route as a final outlet.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since single high leaves the deep crosser vulnerable to a lurking user defender. Watch the flat defender on the right side, if he widens too quickly to the flat route it opens a throwing lane for the corner route behind him. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes he can jump the crosser and turn it into a pick six. Man coverage with no help over the top gets exposed by the Y Cross route working across the field, but a robber or spy sitting in the intermediate middle zone can undercut this route entirely. Cover 3 defenses that get their corner to sink into the deep third rather than jumping the flat can take away both the corner route and the crosser in one motion, forcing a checkdown to the flat.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the safety alignment to confirm if you are getting single high or two high, since the Y Cross crosser thrives against single high man coverage.

If the defense shows man coverage, trust the crosser to win versus linebackers who cannot stay in phase over the middle of the field.

Against zone shells, look to hit the corner route on the right side since it settles in the deep outside third and exploits cover 3 rotations.

Combine this play with Mesh or Y Shallow Cross in your play calling sequence to condition defenders to sit low, then hit this deeper crosser once they start jumping underneath routes.

This play works best on second and medium to second and long, giving you a full route tree to layer verticals and crossers without needing to rely purely on the checkdown.
