Breakdown

Deep Attack is a Four Verts based Flood concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel. To the trips side, the outside receiver runs a Go, the slot runs a vertical Streak that bends into a Corner route, and the inner slot works an Out at the sticks, creating a three level flood that stretches the boundary from deep to intermediate. Backside, the single receiver runs a Go to hold the safety and cornerback, while the TE or RB releases into a shallow drag to the far side, giving the quarterback a checkdown away from the flood. Blocking is a standard five man protection with no run action, and the primary read starts with the deep Corner route working against Cover 3 and Cover 1 rotation before working down to the Out and flood underneath.

Defensive Reads

Track the deep safety alignment before the snap. A single high look invites the Corner route to work into open grass, while two deep safeties should shift your first read to the Out route and flood underneath. Watch the cornerback over the Corner route. If he sits in a hard outside shade with no deep help, expect him to jump the route and you should climb your progression toward the Streak or Go instead. Key the flat or curl to flat defender on the trips side. If he widens with the Out route immediately, that confirms zone coverage and opens a throwing window behind him for the Corner route. Against Cover 1 or man pressure, watch for a lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the middle of the field. That defender can undercut the Streak, so lean on the outside Go route or backside comeback if you hot routed it. If the defense shows a delayed blitz off the edge, the five man protection can break down quickly. Get through your first two reads fast, and if nothing is open, look for the checkdown release to the flood side or throw it away rather than take a sack on a long down and distance.

Usage Tips

Use this on 2nd or 3rd and long when you need explosive plays and are willing to trust a five man protection against exotic blitzes.

Presnap, identify single high versus two high safeties. A single high safety with the corner playing off suggests Cover 3, which this concept is built to attack with the Corner route settling in the deep third seam.

If you see Cover 2 shell with two safeties deep, prioritize the intermediate Out route since the flat defender and deep half safety will have trouble covering the sideline throw.

Hot route the backside single receiver into a deep comeback if you are getting single coverage with no safety help, giving you a true four verticals answer against man coverage.

Pair this play with Curls or Digs H Option earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then come back to Deep Attack once you see the defense cheating up on underneath zones.
