Breakdown

Quick Slants is a horizontal stretch concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel. Both outside receivers run slants that break inward at roughly five yards while the slot receiver on the left runs a quick out to the flat, creating a natural slant-flat combo on each side of the formation. There is no visible pass protection adjustment shown in the diagram, so this reads as a quick-hitting, timing-based passer play designed to beat both man and zone coverage by getting the ball out before pressure arrives. The primary read progression starts with the near-side slant, then works to the flat route underneath if the slant window is closed by an inside defender.

Defensive Reads

Watch cornerback depth pre-snap, tight press alignment invites a jam that disrupts the slant timing and forces a hitch in the route. Key the flat defender on the slant side, if he sinks with the slant route the flat becomes wide open for an easy checkdown. Man coverage with no underneath help is the biggest liability for this concept since both slants create natural rub potential against tight man technique. Cover 2 with hard-charging safeties can jump the outside slant late, so the quarterback needs to anticipate the throw rather than waiting to see the route fully break. Blitzes that bring extra defenders off the edge are less threatening here since the ball comes out fast, but interior twists or delayed blitzes up the middle can collapse the pocket before the first read clears.

Usage Tips

Fire this out of a no-huddle tempo to catch defenses in base looks before they can disguise coverage.

Pre-snap, identify whether the corners are playing off or press. Off coverage means the slant window opens immediately at the snap.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with linebackers sitting shallow, hot route the backside slant into a speed out to attack the void behind the flat defender.

Pair this with Curls or Digs H Option later in the drive so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the intermediate routes off similar formation looks.

Best used on 2nd or 3rd and short to medium, since the timing throw wins the leverage battle before blitzers get home, and it punishes overaggressive nano blitz packages that crash the interior.
