45 Quick Base is the designated run play out of Spread Y-Slot's 11 personnel, showing a dive concept straight through the middle of the formation. The diagram shows five offensive linemen at the line with the HB aligned in the backfield taking a direct handoff on a north-south track between the guards, with the four receivers running vertical routes upfield to occupy the corners and safeties. This is a run play, not a pass concept, and the primary read is the interior gap: the ball carrier reads the double team and the first wave of blocks up front, keying whether the play side guard or center wins his block to determine which crease to hit.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the defenders stacked inside the tackle box, a six or seven man front with linebackers creeping up signals a run blitz look designed to beat this exact play. Watch safety depth, if both safeties are shallow and creeping toward the box pre-snap that is a run key and you should expect gap discipline from the linebackers. Post-snap, identify whether the defensive line is slanting toward the play side gap, a hard slant with a linebacker filling behind it will blow this play up before the back reaches the line. User defenders spying the A or B gap and shooting a gap on the snap (a nano blitz look) will consistently stop this dive, so mix in RPO reads or draw plays from this same set to punish that aggressiveness. Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with linebackers sitting at normal depth and not creeping are the most vulnerable to this play since there is no extra run support added to the box.
Usage Tips
Use this out of Spread Y-Slot after showing the same pre-snap look as your quick game passes like Quick Slants or Curls so the defense cannot key run versus pass from alignment alone.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders inside the tackles this dive concept gets clogged, so bail to a bubble screen or RPO Peek Slant instead.
Attack light boxes and Dime or Nickel packages where linebackers are removed for coverage, since this play thrives when there are fewer bodies to account for between the tackles.
Pair this play with Fk Bubble HB Draw or RPO Zone Peek in the same series so the defense has to respect both the interior dive action and the perimeter constraint plays off similar formation looks.
Best called on early downs (first and ten or second and short) to stay ahead of the chains, and it is a strong short yardage or goal line changeup when defenses expect a pass out of this spread personnel.
