Y Shallow X Post is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel that stretches the defense horizontally and vertically. The X receiver runs a deep post from the boundary while the outside slot runs a corner route to the flag, the inner receiver clears vertically on a seam, and the Y runs a shallow cross underneath that pairs with a check release defender coming across from the backfield. This is a man beater built around the shallow crossing action creating natural rub traffic while the post and corner stress deep coverage, with the primary read starting on the post shot, then working down to the shallow crosser as the check down against man pressure.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety shell first, single high safeties will rob the post so you need to climb the pocket and reset your eyes to the shallow route quickly. Watch the flat defender and any user controlled linebacker who might sit in the shallow route's lane, this is the biggest lurk threat against the underneath crosser. Identify man coverage by seeing if defenders turn their backs to run with receivers at the snap, this concept thrives on the natural traffic created by the shallow route against man match. Zone coverage with two deep safeties and underneath defenders sinking will take away both the post and corner routes, forcing you to check down to the shallow crosser or check release blocker. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are vulnerable since the shallow route clears the middle fast, but disguised zone blitzes can jump the shallow crosser if the defense times the drop correctly.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties the post has to split them so throw with anticipation as soon as the corner breaks off his route.

Against man coverage let the shallow route develop across the field, the natural rub from the crossing traffic will spring it open versus man match schemes and nano blitzes.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the shallow cross gives you a quick underneath answer if the deep shots are covered.

Hot route the flat defender check release into a quick flare if you see a heavy blitz look, this gives you an extra checkdown against six or seven man pressure.

Pair this with Y Cross or Mesh from the same set to keep defenders guessing on shallow crossing concepts, then mix in Post X Curl or Mtn Dagger to threaten the same coverage shells with different vertical stems.
