RPO Alert Orbit Swing

Breakdown

RPO Alert Orbit Swing is a run pass option built off inside zone with an orbit motion man leaking to the flat for a swing route. The quarterback's primary read is the alert defender, usually the play side linebacker or overhang defender: if that defender crashes down to fill the run fit, pull and throw the swing to the orbit motion man for a numbers advantage in space, and if he stays wide or drops to cover the flat, hand the ball off into the vacated inside zone lane. This concept is a run first RPO designed to punish light box counts and undisciplined linebacker flow, making it a strong zone and man beater depending purely on the alert key rather than route leverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits at depth or bails into a zone drop instead of attacking the line he is defending the swing and you should hand the ball off. Identify the alignment of the overhang defender or slot corner over the orbit motion man before the snap, tight alignment with outside leverage signals he is keying run first and can be exploited with the swing. User controlled defenders flashing down into the box or spying the orbit man post snap are the biggest threat, since a smart user can rob the alert key and blow up both options at once. This concept struggles against disciplined zone shells like Tampa 2 or Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, since those coverages naturally have someone sitting on the swing route regardless of the run fake. Heavy blitz packages that send extra numbers into the box can still be there if the alert defender himself blitzes, so recognize A gap or B gap pressure pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out immediately rather than trusting the mesh point.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back to follow the orbit man, since that tells you whether the flat is covered before the snap even happens.

Count the box defenders before the snap and only trust the run key if you have a numbers advantage, otherwise be ready to pull it no matter what the alert defender does.

Take the swing throw immediately once you see the alert key trigger downhill, this is a timing throw and hesitating lets the flat defender close the passing window.

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage to keep defenses honest, then pair it with Fk Bubble HB Draw or Fake Jet HB Seam later in the series so defenders start flowing wrong on similar formation looks.

Sequence this play after you have shown base inside zone or Jet Inside Zone a few times, since defenses that key run flow hard will get gashed by the swing throw once they start crashing the alert defender.
