Mtn X Post lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel and uses a pre-snap motion from the slot to help identify the coverage shell before the snap. Post snap, the X receiver runs a deep post to attack the middle of the field while the outside receiver on that side clears out with an over route, and on the far side the two receivers work a deep over combo that also clears space underneath. The HB releases into a shallow flat check release route as the last progression option. This is a man beater concept designed to isolate the X post against single high safety looks, with the primary read progressing from the X post to the backside over route and finally down to the HB check release in the flat.

Defensive Reads

Key the free safety pre-snap, if he sits in the middle of the field at depth this is a single high shell and the X post has a clean throwing window down the middle. Watch the cornerback over the X receiver at the snap, if he opens his hips and runs with the post instead of sitting on a zone landmark, the defense is playing man coverage. Track any defender who follows the motion man across the formation, this confirms man coverage assignments and tells the quarterback the post route will have a direct man matchup. Look for a linebacker or safety sitting in a deep zone drop over the middle, that presence signals a robber or Cover 3 look that can undercut the post route and force the check to the backside over or HB flat. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking in the middle third, since a smart user will sit in the post window and jump the throw if the quarterback stares down the primary read too long.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to bait the defense into showing man or zone coverage before the snap, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage.

Throw the X post with anticipation against single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, releasing the ball before the receiver breaks to beat the safety rotating over the top.

If the defense shows two high safeties, look to the backside over route or hold the ball for the HB check release since the post window will be tighter against Cover 2 or Cover 4.

Pair this play with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn Slot Out in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the vertical post shot and the horizontal crossing routes from the same formation.

Use this on early downs or in second and medium situations to keep the defense honest, then come back to Mtn Dagger or Post Flood Salem later in the series to attack the same coverage tendencies differently.
