Breakdown

WR Mid Screen out of Spread Y-Slot lines up the inside receiver as the screen target while the offensive line releases upfield to set a wall of blockers in front of him. The outside receiver runs a flat route that clears out the underneath defender and drags coverage to the boundary, opening a lane for the screen to develop behind the線 of blockers. This is a classic screen play designed to beat aggressive man pressure and blitz packages, with the primary read being the slot receiver on the screen as soon as the blockers get out in front, checking down to the flat route only if the screen is jumped immediately.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive ends or edge rushers who sit and read the screen instead of rushing, since they can blow this play up before the blockers get set. Man coverage with blitz packages is the ideal matchup for this call because the rushers take themselves out of the throwing lane and cannot recover to the screen. Zone coverage with linebackers sitting short can clog the screen lane, so key on the linebacker depth pre snap to decide between the screen and the flat route. User controlled defenders who lurk near the line of scrimmage or spy the quarterback can jump the screen route immediately, so identify any user movement post snap before committing to the throw. Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with disciplined underneath defenders tend to shut this play down since they keep numbers in the screen lane.

Usage Tips

Call this play when you see man coverage or a blitz look pre snap since the extra rushers will run themselves out of the play and into your blockers.

Use the flat route as a hot read if the defense sits back in a soft zone shell and the screen lane gets clogged immediately.

Pair this with Bubble Screens and RPO Read Screen in your play calling script to condition the defense to respect quick throws, then hit them with a deep shot off the same pre snap look.

Best used on early downs or after a big gain to slow down a fast flowing defense and reset the blocking angles in your favor.

User the blocking linemen manually if you are comfortable, sealing off the first defender to string out the screen for a bigger gain.
