Breakdown

Slot Outs lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel and puts three receivers to the right and two tight ends stacked to the left. On the right side the outside WR runs a vertical seam while the two inside receivers cross underneath: the near TE runs an out that breaks toward the sideline and the other TE releases outside then breaks back inside on an under route, creating natural traffic for zone defenders. To the left the two receivers run a vertical clear route and a flat out to hold the corner and flood that side. This is a man beater built on the crossing traffic underneath and a zone beater against Cover 3 or Cover 4 since the out and under routes settle into the same soft spots as zone defenders rotate. The primary read starts with the short out route on the right for a quick, safe completion, then progresses to the crossing under route if the flat defender jumps the out, with the backside out serving as a checkdown against soft coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender on the strong side immediately after the snap since his reaction to the out route dictates whether you throw underneath or work the crossing under route behind him. Identify the middle linebacker's drop depth: if he sinks deep into a zone drop, the crossing under route sits in the soft spot for an easy completion. Man coverage with a single high safety is where this play shines the most because the out and under combo creates natural separation through picks. Cover 3 with aggressive corners squatting on the sideline will jump the out route, so be ready to reset your eyes to the under route or the backside out. Watch for a blitzing linebacker off the edge on the strong side since the quick out route serves as your built in answer to beat pressure before it arrives.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in third and short situations where the quick out route is a safe, high percentage throw against soft corners or off man coverage.

Check the corner's pre-snap depth: if he is playing tight man, the crossing under route becomes your best option since it creates natural rub traffic against the flat defender.

If the defense shows two high safeties, target the vertical seam on the outside since the underneath routes will likely be sagging into zone drops.

Pair this play with Curls or Digs H Option in the same set so you can attack the same look with a deeper breaking route once defenders start jumping the quick out.

Use pre-snap motion or a hot route on the backside TE to a shallow drag if you need an extra outlet against heavy underneath zone coverage.
