Breakdown

Y Seam features a five man route concept out of Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel, attacking downfield off the shotgun snap. The two receivers to the left run a vertical clear out and a dig underneath it, the slot TE to the right runs the namesake seam route straight up the hash, the outside receiver on the right side runs a corner route off a vertical stem, and the back releases on a flat route as the checkdown and outlet. This is a man beater built to isolate the seam route against linebackers or safeties in coverage, with the primary read progression starting at the Y seam, then working to the corner route breaking outside, and finally checking down to the flat if the interior throwing lanes are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage because a single high safety cheating toward the seam side signals the defense expects this exact concept Watch for man coverage indicators like cornerbacks aligned tight to the slot TE, which tells you the seam route has a favorable one on one matchup Post-snap, key the middle linebacker drop because a fast flow to the seam route can be beaten by the flat route or the dig breaking underneath Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells are most vulnerable to this play since the seam splits the zone or beats man coverage vertically Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with a deep safety sitting over the top can shut this down, so be ready to check down to the flat or dig against those shells

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high or single high safety look because the seam route is the primary target against single high shells where the middle of the field is more vulnerable

Use the dig route on the left as a hot route adjustment against zone heavy coverage since it settles in the soft spot vacated by underneath linebackers

Attack this play on second and medium or third and short to medium distances where the defense may sit in zone coverage and leave the seam window open

Pair Y Seam with Curls or Digs H Option in the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical seam shots and intermediate breaking routes

If the user controlled defender jumps the seam route immediately, look to the corner route on the right for the big play since it clears out behind the jumping defender
