Mtn Y Cross is a man beater built around the Y receiver working a deep crossing route from one side of the formation to the other, stressing man defenders with natural rub traffic and creating separation against trailing linebackers or slot corners. The mountain concept stacks a vertical clear-out route on the same side to pull the deep safety away from the crossing lane, while underneath routes occupy zone defenders and give the quarterback a quick outlet if the cross is not open. The primary read starts with the deep clear-out to check if the safety bites, then progresses to the Y crossing route as the first read, working underneath to the checkdown or flat route if the linebackers sink deep enough to close the window.
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap, since that usually means man coverage underneath and a bigger window for the Y Cross to work against trailing defenders. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink too fast into zone drops the crossing route will hit the soft spot between the second and third level. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 match zones with a rat linebacker sitting in the middle of the field, since a user controlled lurk defender can jump the crossing route and turn it into a pick six. Check cornerback alignment before the snap, tight press man on the outside receivers often signals blitz support that leaves the middle vulnerable to the cross. If the defense shows two high safeties who both roll down hard after the snap, expect a Tampa 2 or Cover 6 look, and be ready to check down to the underneath route since the deep crosser will get squeezed.
Use this play on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage or single high shells. Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one deep safety with man coverage indicators on the corners, the Y Cross has a great chance to hit for a big gain against trailing defenders. Motion the H back or use a hot route to adjust the underneath routes into the flat if you diagnose a Tampa 2 or deep zone look that could squeeze the crossing route. Pair this call with Mtn Flood or Mtn Dagger from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and the intermediate crosser, since both plays share the same mountain concept clear-out but attack different levels. Against user linebackers who key the crosser aggressively, use the play-action or RPO tag if the shell shows run support first to open the window even wider.
