Breakdown

Jets Z Shallow is a shallow cross concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot that attacks man coverage with a natural rub and gives zone defenders a tough horizontal stretch to cover. The Z runs a shallow drag underneath while the backside receiver works a dig or crossing route behind it, creating a two-level crosser combo with the TE and HB releasing into the flat and check down areas to hold linebackers. Primary progression starts with the Z shallow drag as the first read against man coverage, then works to the deeper crosser or dig if the shallow is taken away, with the flat route as the checkdown against a hard sink from underneath zone defenders.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for a single high safety look which signals man coverage underneath and tells you the shallow drag should be your first read Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into zone drops the shallow drag will be there in the shallow void but the dig behind it becomes the better target User controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone lurk can jump the drag route, so be ready to work the crosser or the checkdown to the flat Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can clog the shallow drag and force the QB to progress to the dig or the deep crosser Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge leave the shallow drag open quickly since the route develops fast underneath the rush, making this a strong answer to nano blitz pressure

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or third and short since the shallow drag is a high percentage completion that picks up positive yardage after the catch

Identify pre-snap if the defense is showing man coverage by checking for a single high safety and tight press alignment on the corners, since the shallow drag will win instantly against man due to the natural rub

Hot route the HB to a flat release if the defense shows blitz look with stacked box, giving your QB an outlet against pressure

Pair this play with Y Shallow Cross or H Shallow Cross in your play sequencing so the defense cannot key on which receiver runs the shallow drag, keeping linebackers honest

Against zone heavy defenses, look to hit the deeper crossing route or dig behind the shallow drag since it will find the void between the underneath zone and the deep defenders
