X Dagger from Spread Y-Slot Shotgun pairs a deep clear-out with an underneath in cut to attack the middle of the field. The outside receiver on the left runs a corner route to occupy the deep defender while the seam runner underneath sits down on a dig that crosses into the vacated space, creating the classic dagger vertical stretch. On the right side, a receiver runs a corner breaking route to hold the flat and deep quarter defenders, while the slot underneath runs an out to the sideline and the running back checks down in the backfield with a flare to the boundary as a built in outlet. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to punish two deep safety shells by clearing out the underneath zone with the corner routes and then hitting the dig behind linebackers, with the primary read starting on the dig route before working to the corner and checking down to the flare or out route if the middle is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Key the safeties before the snap. Two deep safeties sitting more than ten yards off the ball is a strong indicator of Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which the dig route is designed to exploit. Watch the flow of the linebackers after the snap. If they sink hard with the dig runner and stay square, that is a zone drop, and you should trust the route to sit down in the window behind them. Identify man coverage by checking if the corners turn and run with the corner routes instead of sinking into a deep third or half. If corners are in man, the underneath dig becomes riskier and the flare route gains value. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field. That defender can undercut the dig route, so if you see a linebacker or safety sitting shallow in the throwing lane, work the corner route or check down instead. Watch for blitz packages with linebackers crashing downhill immediately after the snap. This clears the dig throwing lane but shortens your protection time, so get the ball out quickly to the running back or the dig before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when you expect a two deep safety shell like Cover 2 or Cover 4 because the dig route sits right in the honey hole between the corners and safeties.

Pre-snap, check the safety alignment. If both safeties are deep and off the ball, that confirms the corner routes will clear space for the dig to work, so lock your eyes there at the snap.

If you see man coverage indicators like tight press corners and linebackers shaded over your slot, switch your primary read to the corner route or flare since the dig can get picked off by underneath man defenders in a robber look.

Hot route the flare to a wheel or seam if you diagnose Cover 0 or heavy blitz pre-snap, since the running back can become a big play option against blitzing linebackers who vacate coverage responsibility.

Pair this play with 45 Quick Base or Curls earlier in a series so defenders start sitting on shorter routes, then come back to X Dagger to hit the dig over the top once linebackers cheat up.
