X Dagger from Spread Y-Slot in Shotgun lines up two receivers to the left running the dagger combo: the outside X sits on a deep dig at roughly 15 yards while the inside receiver clears vertically up the seam to hold the safety and linebackers before the dig sits down behind them. To the right the TE and slot run a shallow drag and a corner/flag combo, giving the quarterback a shallow crosser as a checkdown and a corner route as a boundary-clearing option. The lone back stays in as a check release or safety valve on a vertical/curl out of the backfield. This is a classic zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 2 by using the seam runner to occupy deep defenders so the dig can sit in the vacated middle void, with the primary read progressing from the dig, to the drag, then to the check release back.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: if both safeties are deep and split, this is a Cover 2 shell and the corner route on the right side becomes the key stress point. Watch the middle linebacker's initial drop; if he sprints to the deep middle in Cover 3, the dig should sit down right behind him for an easy completion. Post-snap, respect any user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow drag area since that route is the first thing a sim defense collapses on. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since the quick drag and check release become the immediate answer versus pressure. If the defense shows Cover 4 or a deep quarters shell with corners playing outside leverage, the dig window shrinks and the checkdown to the back becomes the higher percentage play.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties because the dig only opens up if the safety is forced to respect the vertical seam runner.
If you see Cover 3 with a hard flowing linebacker, hot route the drag to a spot or sit route to give the quarterback an easier read underneath.
Against Cover 2, key the corner route to pull the flat defender and open the dig behind him rather than forcing the seam.
Use this play on second and medium to third and long situations where you need to sit in the soft spot between the underneath zone and deep coverage.
Pair X Dagger with Curls or Four Verticals in the same set so the defense has to respect both the deep seam and the shorter curl window, keeping linebackers honest on their drops.
