Slot Stick out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot is a classic Stick concept built to attack zone coverage with quick, high percentage throws. The backside outside receiver runs a corner route while the slot receiver on that side sits on a stick route, giving the QB an easy man beater sit read against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops. On the strong side, the TE releases into the flat while the outside receiver climbs vertically up the seam, and the RB works a check release into a flat/swing route underneath, giving the offense a five man route distribution against both man and zone shells. The primary read progression starts with the stick route in the flat/curl window, then works to the corner route if the underneath defender sinks, and finally checks down to the RB swing if the defense drops everyone into coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment. Two high safeties usually signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which opens the corner route window against a hard flat defender. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If the underneath zone defenders sink too deep on the stick route, the RB swing and TE flat become wide open outlets. Man coverage with a linebacker on the RB is a green light to attack with the RB flat release, since most defenders in man cannot recover in time. Cover 3 with a sinking curl/flat defender is the toughest matchup for this concept since it clogs the stick throwing lane, forcing the QB to work to the corner route or checkdown. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone. If the defense shows a spy or rat in the middle of the field, avoid the stick route and take the corner shot instead.
Usage Tips
Use this play on third and short to third and medium since the stick route sits right in the sticks against zone drops and the RB swing gives a built in checkdown against blitz looks.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 2 shell. Against Cover 3 the stick route sits in the hole between the underneath zone defenders for an easy completion.
Hot route the RB to a quick flat release if you see man coverage with a linebacker matched up, this creates an instant leverage advantage and a free access throw.
Pair this play with Y Stick or Stick Nod in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between different stick route depths and timing.
Combine with Curls or Digs H Option on the next snap to condition the defense to sit on shallow routes, then hit the corner route deep once safeties start creeping up.
