PA Read out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot uses a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before attacking all three levels of the field. The outside receiver runs a vertical go route up the sideline, the slot receiver works a deep out breaking toward the numbers, the Y-Slot TE runs an out and up (sit and climb) route that turns into a corner up the seam, and the flat route underneath sits at the sticks along the boundary. This is a play-action pass designed to beat zone coverage by stretching flat-to-deep, with the primary read progression starting at the corner up route from the TE, then working to the deep out, and checking down to the flat route if the defense sits deep.
Pre-snap, identify single-high versus two-high safety shells since this concept is built to exploit soft spots in Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they bite hard on the run fake, the deep out and corner up routes will have wide throwing lanes behind them. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender dropping into the deep half or quarter, since a rangy safety can undercut the corner up route from the TE if he reads the quarterback's eyes. Man coverage with press corners and no safety help over the top can jump the vertical go route immediately, so avoid this play against known Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitz packages. Blitz-heavy defenses that bring five or six rushers force a quick decision, so check if the flat route is open immediately as a checkdown against nano blitz pressure.
Use this on early downs or in second and medium situations where defenses respect the run fake and bite on linebacker flow.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards, target the deep out and corner up routes since those attack the seams between zones.
Hot route the flat route into a quick drag if you diagnose man coverage, since the natural spacing of this concept is built more for zone beating than tight man coverage.
Pair this with HB Draw or Inside Zone from the same formation to keep defenses honest on the play-action fake before calling PA Read later in a series.
Look to combine this with Four Verticals or Mills Z Shallow in your play-calling script so defenses cannot sit on the flat-to-corner combination without opening up deep shots.
