PA Read is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot that shows four receivers releasing into a route combo designed to attack the deep middle and stretch the field horizontally underneath. The outside receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers, the inner slot works a deep crosser toward the opposite hash, the next receiver runs a shallow drag underneath from left to right, and the tight end runs a corner route breaking hard to the sideline off a vertical stem, with the running back staying in to sell the play-action fake. This is a man beater built around the corner and seam combo creating a natural high low on the boundary defender, with the primary read progression starting on the TE corner route, then working to the deep crosser sitting behind linebackers if the corner is squeezed, and checking down to the shallow drag versus aggressive man pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify safety alignment first, two high shells invite the TE corner route while single high shells push the deep crosser into the primary read. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the play-action fake, the crosser and shallow drag will have wide open throwing lanes underneath. Post-snap, key the flat or curl defender responsible for the sideline, since this determines whether the TE corner route has room to sit down or gets undercut by a zone defender sinking late. Man coverage with press corners is vulnerable to the shallow drag and deep crosser combo, since both routes create natural separation against trailing defenders working through traffic. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, since a good user rat can jump the deep crosser and turn this into a bad turnover if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Use PA Read on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium when the defense is showing run support with linebackers creeping toward the box, since the play-action fake needs defenders biting downhill to create the window for the corner and crosser combo.

Identify the coverage shell before the snap by checking safety depth, if you see two high safeties sitting deep, prioritize the TE corner route since it attacks the boundary before the safety can rotate over.

Against single high looks or Cover 3, lean on the deep crosser as your primary target since it settles in the void behind the linebackers and in front of the deep safety.

If the defense shows man coverage with a corner pressed on the TE, hot route the shallow drag into a quick option or speed up the crosser to beat trailing defenders before the play-action fake fully develops.

Pair PA Read with Read Option or Power Read from this set to keep the defense honest on run fits, then come back to PA Read once linebackers start flowing hard on run reads, since the fake becomes far more effective after establishing the ground game tendency.
