Breakdown

Double Slant is a quick-hitting man beater out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the outer receiver on the right running a slant across the field while the inner slot receiver on that side runs a short out to the flat, and on the left side the lone receiver runs a slant into the middle of the field to sit underneath the opposite slant. This creates a natural pick/rub concept on the right side while giving the QB a two-way go read between the two slants. The primary read progression starts with the near-side slant/flat combo, working to the backside slant if the underneath defenders jump the flat route.

Defensive Reads

Watch for corners playing outside leverage presnap, this tells you the slant window on the boundary side will be open immediately at the snap. If the defense shows a two-high safety shell with corners in soft zone, expect underneath defenders to sit on the slants and you may need to check into a hot route. Key the flat defender on the right side, if he widens with the out route it opens a throwing lane for the slant behind him. Watch for a linebacker blitz off the edge since the quick game timing of Double Slant is designed to beat pressure before it arrives, but a delayed blitzer can disrupt the rhythm throw. Man coverage with inside technique corners is the toughest matchup here since it removes the natural rub advantage the slant/flat combo creates.

Usage Tips

Fire this play in obvious passing situations like 3rd and short to medium where quick separation on slants can beat aggressive underneath coverage.

Presnap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners playing tight; the slant and flat combo on the right creates a natural rub that is difficult for man defenders to fight through.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or speed out if you diagnose zone coverage sitting the underneath throwing lanes.

Use this play in sequence with Bubble Screens or HB Swing to keep linebackers honest, then come back to Double Slant once they start biting on perimeter run/screen looks.

Get the ball out on time on the first or second read since the routes break quickly, this is not a play to hold the ball and let routes develop.
