Breakdown

Kc Post out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel is a post-heavy passing concept built to attack single-high safety shells. The route combo pairs a deep post from the boundary with underneath crossers and an out route to occupy the flat defenders and linebackers, creating a natural high-low read against zone while giving you a hard win against man coverage on the post. Your primary progression starts with the post route, checking for the safety's depth and break, then works down to the underneath crosser or out route if the post window is closed.

Defensive Reads

Check the free safety's alignment before the snap, if he is shaded to one side or sitting deep middle in a true single-high look, that tells you the post has a clean lane to work with. Watch the cornerback's press or off alignment on the post route, off coverage gives you an easier release while press coverage means you need to protect against a jam that could throw off your timing. Post-snap, key the safety's break, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes he can undercut the post, so pump fake or look off before committing to the deep throw. Identify any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since this play's crossing routes can run right into a rat linebacder or spy. This play struggles against two-high shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 where the safety can sink into the post window, and it gets shut down by disguised zone blitzes that drop a linebacker into the shallow crosser while still bringing pressure.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a single-high or two-high safety look, since Kc Post is designed to exploit single-high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 where the post has room to split the safety. If you see two-high, consider hot routing the post to a comeback or hitch to avoid throwing into a robber underneath. Use this play on early downs or second and medium to keep the defense guessing between run and pass, since the deep shot puts pressure on the defense to respect verticals. Sequence this play with Curls or Digs H Option earlier in a series so the defense starts sitting on shorter routes, then hit them with the post for the explosive play once they bite. Against aggressive user blitzes, get the ball out on the underneath crosser quickly since the post takes time to develop and a free rusher will collapse the pocket before the deep route matures.
