Mtn Curls Texas lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel and features a jailbreak style Texas concept out of the backfield. The RB releases to the flat with the number one route while the outside receiver on that side works a vertical stem up to about 12 yards before breaking down into a curl, giving a two level stretch on that side. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep crossing dig style route working across the field while the other backside receiver runs a vertical stem that breaks outside toward the sideline, creating a mirrored curl to hold the corner. This is a man beater at its core, using the Texas concept to isolate the RB against a linebacker in space, and the primary read progression starts with the RB in the flat, then works to the near curl, then the backside crosser if the underneath areas are clogged.
Identify pre-snap whether the linebackers are aligned to take away the RB out of the backfield, since a linebacker cheating toward the flat signals man coverage and confirms the Texas concept as your go to answer. Watch the corner over the curl route, if he sits at a shallow depth in off man or zone, expect him to jump the curl and you should progress to the RB or crosser instead. Key the safety rotation after the snap, a single high safety rolling to the curl side indicates a possible Cover 3 or Cover 1 shell, which opens up the backside crosser working away from that rotation. Beware of a nano blitz or user blitz off the edge on the curl side, since the quick flat route to the RB is your built in answer against pressure and should be your checkdown when you feel contain collapsing. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone shells, the curl routes will settle in the soft spot between the corner and safety, so read the underneath linebacker drop before committing to the throw.
Use this play on second and medium to third and short situations where the flat and curl combo can pick up the sticks quickly against man coverage.
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like linebackers shading toward the RB or corners playing tight press, since the Texas concept thrives against man leverage.
If you diagnose zone coverage, hot route the backside crosser into a deeper dig or bench route to sit down in the void behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties.
Pair this play with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn Dagger in your play calling sequence to keep the defense honest, since both plays start from the same formation but attack different levels and leverage points.
Motion the RB or slot receiver before the snap to force the defense to declare man or zone, which speeds up your post-snap read on the flat route.
