Kc HB Draw out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot is a designed delay run that dresses up as a dropback pass before handing off to the HB. The offensive line shows pass protection for a beat before releasing into run blocks, pulling second-level defenders and defensive ends upfield with their pass rush momentum while the RB sits and waits for the lane to develop. This is a pure run play built to gash aggressive pass rush teams and blitz-heavy defenses, with the primary read being the frontside gap first, then bouncing outside if the interior gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a heavy blitz look or has multiple second level defenders creeping toward the line, since that confirms the draw will hit big. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are crashing hard downhill on run flow or dropping into a fast pass rush lane, the cutback will be wide open. If the defense shows a two high safety shell with linebackers sitting still and reading the mesh point, this play gets shut down quickly since they will fill the draw lane before it develops. Post-snap, key the defensive ends, if they are selling hard upfield on the pass rush without staying home, that is the green light for the RB to press the hole. Beware user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or a defensive tackle who stunts inside, since a disciplined interior read can blow up the draw before it starts.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs after you have shown the same shotgun spread personnel on a few dropback passes so the defense is primed to rush the passer.
Best used against defenses that bring pressure or send extra rushers, since their aggressive first step upfield is exactly what creates the cutback lane.
Avoid calling this against disciplined zone teams that hold their linebackers and read the backfield, since they will not bite on the play fake.
Pair it in a sequence with 45 Quick Base or Quick Slants earlier in the series so the defense keys on quick game passing and speeds up their rush.
On third and short or second and medium, this is a great changeup call after you have thrown a few hot route quick passes from the same formation to keep the defense off balance.
Use pre-snap motion sparingly here since a static look sells the pass-heavy tendency better and keeps linebackers flowing hard upfield at the snap.
