Breakdown

Y Stick out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot is a five man route concept built around quick, high percentage throws. The backside runs a deep out from the outside receiver and a corner route from the slot, while the frontside features a shallow drag underneath a stick route from the Y (marked as the number 1 read), with the outside receiver on the frontside running a vertical clear route up the numbers. The primary read progression starts with the stick route from the Y, working to the flat or drag underneath if the stick is capped, and this concept is designed to beat both zone and man coverage by using leverage and horizontal spacing to isolate defenders.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals the stick window will be tight and you should progress to the flat or corner route immediately. Watch the slot cornerback leverage pre-snap, since outside leverage invites the stick route to settle inside for an easy completion. Identify Cover 3 shells by checking if the free safety rotates late, since the stick concept exploits the flat defender who has to choose between the shallow drag and the stick sitting behind him. Man coverage with a single high safety is vulnerable to this concept because the stick route creates natural rub leverage against trailing defenders, especially if the Y is matched up on a slower linebacker. Beware of user controlled defenders sitting the shallow drag or robbing the stick route from depth, since a smart defender lurking underneath can jump these throws if you telegraph the read too early.

Usage Tips

Prioritize the Y stick route as your first read since it settles into the zone soft spot or breaks open on man leverage from a lurking linebacker.

Use pre-snap motion on the slot receiver to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion confirms man coverage and you should hot route the stick to a quick option route.

This play is ideal on third and short to third and medium since the stick and shallow drag both hit quickly against blitzes and underneath zone drops.

Pair this play with Curls or Digs H Option in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses honest, since those concepts attack the same formation with deeper breaking routes if the defense sits on the stick.

Against aggressive blitz packages, hot route the frontside vertical into a quick slant or check the running back into the flat as a hot read to beat pressure before it arrives.
