Breakdown

Y Stick is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot that attacks the underneath zones with quick, high percentage throws. The backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field while the outside receiver on that side clears out on a corner route, and on the play side the TE (marked with the number 1) sits down on a stick route with the slot receiver running a flat route underneath him and the outside receiver clearing vertically up the seam. This is a zone beater at its core, designed to put a horizontal stretch on flat defenders and hook zone linebackers, and the primary read progression starts with the Y stick, works to the flat route underneath it, and comes back to the backside drag if the play side is capped.

Defensive Reads

Identify the flat defender pre-snap since his depth and width dictate whether the stick or the flat route wins first. Watch for a sinking linebacker or user controlled lurk defender sitting on the stick route, since that is the biggest threat to this concept and forces the checkdown to the flat or backside drag. Cover 2 with soft corners tends to struggle against this since the flat defender has to choose between the flat route and the stick, creating an easy conflict read. Man coverage with no help over the top can be beaten quickly by the stick route sitting down before the defender can close, but blitzing linebackers who spy the stick route zone will shut this down. Watch the backside corner route clear out route depth since a robber or hook zone defender who jumps the drag route opens the corner behind him.

Usage Tips

Read the flat defender first since the stick and flat combo forms a natural triangle read that punishes zone drops.

Use this on third and short to medium since the stick route sits down quickly and gives the QB a rhythm throw before pressure arrives.

If you see man coverage pre-snap, hot route the backside drag into a deeper crossing route or motion the slot to create natural rub leverage against man defenders.

Pair this call with Curls or Digs H Option from the same set so the defense has to respect both the quick stick concept and deeper hooking routes, keeping linebackers honest.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, target the stick to flat side away from the deep half safety help since those zones tend to widen out and open the middle void.
