Kc Under Y-out is an underneath route combination built around the Y receiver (tight end or slot) breaking outside on an out route, paired with an under-drag route crossing the formation at the second level and outside receivers running clear-out routes to open space. This is a zone beater at heart, using the out route to sit down in the void between the flat defender and the deep corner while the crosser occupies linebackers and creates natural rub potential against man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the Y-out breaking to the boundary, then works to the underneath crosser if the flat is squeezed, and finally checks down to the running back releasing out of the backfield.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender or curl-flat zone player immediately after the snap since Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells will have a defender sitting directly in the out route window, making the throw risky if not timed correctly. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals a Tampa 2 or Cover 2 look designed to squeeze the underneath crosser. Look for a user-controlled defender flashing down into the flat, which indicates a manual jump on the Y-out route and should trigger an immediate progression to the crosser or checkdown. Cover 1 or Cover 0 man pressure with no safety help over the top is where this play is most vulnerable, since a blitzing linebacker can beat the running back's checkdown protection before the out route develops. Against Cover 2 man, expect the corner to funnel the Y receiver toward the deep safety, so be ready to layer the throw with touch rather than driving it flat.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium to third and short situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure.
Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the Y receiver is playing off coverage or press since the out route needs a cushion to convert cleanly against press man.
If you see a two high safety shell, expect the flat defender to widen, so hot route the under-drag to sit in the vacated middle zone for an easy completion.
Pair this play with Kc HB Draw and Kc Post from the same set to keep linebackers honest, since defenses that overplay the quick out route become vulnerable to play-action shots off similar formation and motion.
Use motion pre-snap on the Y receiver to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since a defender running with the motion confirms man coverage and tells you to snap the out route hard and fast before the corner can undercut it.
