Breakdown

DBL Post is a trips-based passing concept out of the Pistol U Off Trips formation, personnel group 12 (1 RB, 2 TE). The diagram shows the two outside trips receivers running vertical stems that break into posts toward the middle of the field, the inside slot receiver running a quick out-breaking route to occupy underneath defenders, and the RB releasing out of the backfield on a wide flat route to the boundary. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater, designed to attack the deep middle void between safeties with double post routes stacked at different depths while the flat route and short out serve as check down and man beater options against blitz or man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and width, if both safeties are shaded outside the numbers with a wide gap in the middle of the field, this play is primed to hit the post routes for a big gain. Watch the slot cornerback and nickel defender, if they sink deep with the inside post instead of respecting the underlying out route, that signals zone coverage and the quarterback should climb the ladder to the deeper outside post. Key the middle linebacker or user defender dropping into the deep middle third, since a rangy user controlled safety sitting in the post window can jump the throw and create a turnover if the quarterback forces it. Against Cover 4, look for the corners to sink hard on the post stems, if the flat route pulls the underneath defender wide, there is a natural throwing lane for the post that follows. If the defense shows blitz with man coverage behind it, the double post concept becomes risky since there is no natural rub to separate from tight coverage, favor the RB flat route as a quick answer instead.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since this play is built to exploit the seam between two deep safeties in Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.

If you see man coverage or Cover 1 with a single high safety, be ready to check down quickly to the RB flat route or the slot out since the posts will have less room to work against tight man coverage.

Use the outside post as your first read against Cover 2 because the deep post should split the safeties, then work down to the inside post if the corner sits on the initial route.

Hot route the flat route on the RB to a quick flat or check release if you are facing a heavy blitz look, giving your quarterback a fast outlet against pressure.

Pair this play with Switch Flood or PA Y Corner in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between deep post shots and high low flood concepts from the same trips formation.
