Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing, since two safeties playing shallow or tight together signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 and this play is designed to punish that exact leverage. Post-snap, watch the deep safety's first step, if he flows toward the far post the near post is open behind him, and if he sits the far post will win over the top. Be alert for a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in the deep middle hole, since that defender can undercut both post routes and force the checkdown to the square-in. Man coverage with a single high safety is the toughest matchup for this concept, as the safety can rob the middle and both corners can trail the posts with no help needed elsewhere. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge that forces a quick throw, since this concept needs a full beat for the posts to develop and pressure disrupts the deep read entirely.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high look, since this concept is designed specifically to gash Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells where safeties have to choose which post to help on.
If you see Cover 2, target the far post first since the deep half safety cannot cover both posts and one will win in the seam behind the corner.
Against Cover 4 or quarters, work the near post quickly before the safety can get depth and match the route, since quarters defenders are taught to sink with vertical stems.
Use the underneath square-in as a built-in answer versus Cover 3 or man coverage where the posts get squeezed by a robber or deep middle defender.
