PA Boot is a play-action rollout out of Pistol U Off Trips (12 personnel) that pulls the quarterback outside the pocket to the right while the trips side clears out the underneath zones. Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a two high shell or single high look, since PA Boot is designed to hold safeties with the run fake before working the deep route behind them. Key the flow of the linebackers after the snap. If they bite hard on the play fake, the drag route and the settling out route will have wide throwing lanes underneath. Watch for a corner sitting on the flat route with outside contain, which is the main defender that can shut down the checkdown and force the quarterback deeper into the progression. This play struggles against a disciplined Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 look where the corner stays home in the flat and the safety on that side does not bite on the fake, taking away both the flat and the settle route. Beware of a user controlled defender spying the quarterback on the boot side, since that lurk threat can jump the drag route or force an early, inaccurate throw on the run.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or second and short to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers before they can sink into passing lanes.

Watch pre-snap safety depth. If both safeties are deep and cheating to the trips side, the deep vertical route on the backside is more likely to win one on one.

Use the drag route as your rhythm throw against zone coverage since it settles into space vacated by linebackers biting on the play fake.

If the defense shows man coverage with a corner blitz off the edge, get the ball out quickly to the flat route since the boot naturally moves away from that pressure.

Pair this with Jet PA Boot or PA Boot Over in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the run fake direction, then mix in HB Counter or HB Stretch from the same formation to keep linebackers honest on downhill run reads.
