PA Boot is a play-action rollout off the Pistol U Off Trips look with 12 personnel on the field. The quarterback fakes the handoff and boots to the right behind a max protect scheme (two backside blockers hold up the line while the fullback or H-back releases underneath), giving the trips side time to develop. Route-wise, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical clear, the middle slot cuts back across the field on a deep dig/comeback, and the inside slot releases flat into the boot side as the checkdown, while the boot side receiver runs an out toward the sideline as the underneath flat option. The primary read progression starts with the deep comeback/dig coming back to the quarterback, then works down to the flat route and the checkdown release, reading zone defenders from deep to short as the quarterback rolls.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage: a single high safety with corners playing off suggests Cover 3, which is where the deep comeback route hits its window. Watch for slot cornerbacks or nickel defenders crashing hard on run action, since that opens the flat route immediately for an easy completion. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow flat or the throwing lane, since that defender can jump the underneath routes if the quarterback telegraphs the throw. Man coverage shells with linebackers in man on the flat release are vulnerable to the boot since the rollout naturally creates separation on out-breaking routes. Heavy blitz packages with contain rushers set to spy the quarterback can shut this play down fast, so if you see edge defenders staying home instead of rushing, be ready to check down immediately or throw the ball away.
Run PA Boot on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you have already established the run game out of Pistol U Off Trips so linebackers bite on the fake.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap: if you see a single high safety, prioritize the deep comeback route since the corner will likely be playing off in zone.
If the defense shows two high safeties (zone shell), work the flat route and checkdown quickly since the boot gives you an easy answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4.
Pair this call with HB Counter or HB Zone Wk from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits, then hit PA Boot once they start flowing hard to stop the run.
Use manual control on the quarterback to extend the rollout width if the initial read is covered, buying time for the deep comeback to break open against man coverage.
