PA FL Clown is a play-action shot play out of Pistol U Off Trips 12 personnel designed to attack deep zones over the middle and sideline. The trips side runs a double vertical combo with the outermost receiver breaking into a corner-post stem while the inside trips receiver runs a deep dig that climbs to the same landmark, creating a natural high low read on any deep half safety. The backside receiver runs a deep out and up (sluggo style) to hold the corner and stretch the defense horizontally, while the running back fakes the handoff and checks release into the flat area, giving you a built in dumpoff versus a heavy blitz. This is primarily a play-action zone beater against single high and split safety shells, with the primary read starting on the deep dig from the slot and working out to the corner route on the trips side before checking down to the backside sluggo or flat.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth and alignment since a single high safety cheating toward the trips side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the dig route will be your best answer. Watch the cornerback over the backside receiver, if he is playing off with outside leverage the sluggo route can win over the top on a blown coverage rotation. Post snap, key the middle linebacker or Sam for a lurk drop into the dig lane, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes instead of biting on the run fake you need to pump fake and reset to the corner route. Watch for a nano blitz or edge pressure off the play action rollout side, since the running back's check release into the flat becomes the emergency valve against overload blitzes. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or match zone defenses where the deep defenders sink first and read the quarterback, so avoid calling it against defenders who consistently sit on play action shots.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety or two high shells that show run support pre snap since the play action fake sells hardest against defenses cheating up to stop the run. Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into biting on the play fake, which opens up the dig route running behind them. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 1, prioritize the deep dig over the corner route since it settles into the soft spot vacated by the flat defender. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, work the corner route first since it attacks the seam between the cornerback and safety before that safety can rotate over. Pair this play with HB Counter or Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake, then call PA FL Clown on a favorable down like second and short or first and ten to maximize the play action freeze.
