PA Slot Out is a play-action pass out of the Pistol U Off Trips formation with 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE). Off the run fake, the two-receiver side runs a vertical clear route stacked over an out breaking route that snaps hard to the sideline at intermediate depth, while the backside receiver runs a deep dig that crosses the field underneath the vertical. The lone receiver to the boundary runs a deep in route from the slot, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch read from the play-action pocket. Primary progression starts with the deep dig coming across the middle, then works to the out route breaking to the sideline as the checkdown or zone beater against soft coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker at the snap, if he bites hard on the play-action fake the dig route will be wide open working across the field. Identify single high safety pre-snap, this tells you the deep vertical clear is likely drawing the free safety off the dig and out combo underneath. If the defense shows two high safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell), expect the corner to sit on the out route, so lean on the dig or the boundary in route instead. Key the flat defender or cornerback on the trips side, if he sinks with the vertical clear the out route will settle into the vacated zone. Beware user-controlled linebackers spying the quarterback or sitting the shallow crossers, since this play holds the ball long enough for a delayed blitz or lurk defender to disrupt the throw.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium so the play-action fake actually holds linebackers and safeties.

Check pre-snap for a single high safety, since the dig route behind the vertical clear works best against single high man or zone coverage that leaves the middle of the field open.

Hot route the out route into a quick flat or speed out if you see aggressive corner blitz or press man, giving the quarterback a faster release valve.

Pair this play with HB Dive or Strong Power earlier in a series to sell the run fake, then dial up PA Slot Out once linebackers start crashing downhill on run action.
