TE Cross lines up out of Pistol U Off Trips with 12 personnel, showing three receivers to the trips side and a tight end/wing to the boundary. Off the snap, the trips side runs a deep vertical clearout on the outside, a corner route breaking away from the crosser, and the middle receiver working a deep crossing route underneath that action. The backside receiver runs an outside release go route to hold the deep half, while the tight end from the trips bunch runs a deep dig style crosser that sits down in the middle of the field. Defensive Reads

Look for man coverage with a single high safety, this play is designed to exploit man defenders who cannot keep up with the crosser working across the field. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers sitting in hook zones can undercut the crosser and jump the throw if the quarterback stares it down. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells pre-snap, both are vulnerable to the deep corner route and crosser combo since the flat defender has to choose which route to take. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, the crosser will get squeezed by underneath zone defenders, so expect a quicker check down read instead. Beware of user controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field, since the crosser's route path is predictable and a smart user can jump the throwing lane if the quarterback does not manipulate with pump fakes or eyes.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and medium when defenses are more likely to play man coverage to take away the shorter stuff.

Before the snap, check for single high safety looks since that tells you the crosser has room to work against man coverage underneath.

If you see two deep safeties, hot route the crosser into a shallow drag to beat zone coverage and give yourself a quicker underneath outlet.

Combine this with DBL Post and PA Y Corner from the same set so linebackers respect the crosser and safeties freeze on similar route distributions.

Motion the trips receivers before the snap to diagnose man versus zone, then trust the crosser as your first read against man defenders trailing from depth.
