Breakdown

PA Y Corner is a play-action shot play out of Pistol U Off Trips that sells the run fake before attacking the deep middle and sideline. Off the play fake, the Y (in-line TE) releases vertically then breaks hard to the corner against the trips side flat routes, while the two outside receivers on the trips side run a deep vertical/dig combo and a shallow flat, and the backside receiver runs an out and up to clear the corner and stretch the defense horizontally. The primary read starts with the Y corner route working against zone or man coverage in the intermediate to deep area, progressing to the backside vertical if the safety jumps the corner route.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since single high defenses are more vulnerable to the Y corner route sitting behind linebackers. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the middle of the field opens up for the corner route and any crossing traffic underneath. Beware of user-controlled defenders lurking in the intermediate zone, as a smart user can sit on the Y corner route and jump the throw if the quarterback stares it down too long. Look for Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a robber safety, both can be susceptible because the flat route occupies the underneath defender while the corner route attacks the vacated zone. Against Cover 4 or Cover 2 with two deep safeties, expect the corner route to be contested, so be ready to check down to the flat or backside vertical if the safety stays high and takes away the throw.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or in second and short situations where defenses expect run action and bite on the play fake.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties rotating down into the box on the play fake, the Y corner route should come open in the void behind the linebackers.

Use motion or a quick glance at the flat defender to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the flat route can occupy underneath defenders and open a throwing lane for the corner route.

Pair this play with HB Counter or Strong Power earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on run action, then hit them with PA Y Corner for a big play down the seam or sideline.

Combine this call with PA Corner Dig or DBL Post in your play-calling sequence so linebackers and safeties cannot key on one specific route combination out of the same trips look.
