Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Pistol U Off Trips is an outside zone run play with 12 personnel on the field, showing two receivers stacked wide left off screen and a bunched trips look to the right with the tight ends attached in-line. The offensive line flows laterally in a zone step to the play side while the HB takes a lateral path from the pistol alignment before pressing the edge, giving him a track to bounce, bang, or bend based on how the defense flows. This is a zone run designed to stress edge defenders and force backside pursuit, so the primary read is the playside edge (the frontside defensive end or OLB), reading his block and then working through the double team to the second level linebacker fit.

Defensive Reads

Watch for overloaded fronts to the trips side, since a 4-3 or 3-4 front that slants hard to the strength can blow up the zone track before the double team forms. Fast flowing linebackers who key the zone stretch action immediately are the biggest threat, so look for a Mike or Sam linebacker cheating downhill pre-snap. Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells with a single high safety are vulnerable to this play if the box count stays even, since there is no extra run support rotating late. Bear fronts or heavy 46 looks with extra defenders in the box shut this down quickly, forcing a cutback into backside pursuit with no room to bend. Watch the backside defensive end and any user controlled defender crashing down, since a disciplined backside player can chase and tackle for loss if the HB tries to cut back too early.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and identify if the playside edge is a true 4i or 5 technique, since that dictates whether you bounce or press the B gap.

Use the pistol alignment to disguise HB Stretch alongside HB Counter and HB Slam, keeping the defense honest on backside pursuit and cutback lanes.

Against light boxes with 6 or fewer defenders in the box, this play hits fast, so use it on early downs to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots like PA Boot Over later.

User the fullback or lead blocker if available to seal the edge defender, then manually guide the HB with the right stick to find the crease once the double team locks up the frontside linebacker.

Pair this with RPO Zone Alert Flat from the same personnel group so the defense cannot key run based on formation tendencies alone.
