HB Dive out of Pistol U Off Trips is a pure downhill run play designed to hit the A gap fast before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking straight ahead with no pulling linemen, while the two outside receivers up top run off their defenders on go routes to clear space and hold the corners. The HB takes the handoff from Pistol alignment and presses directly north-south behind his line, with the primary read being the immediate A gap and a bounce option to either B gap if the interior gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he is stacked tight behind the defensive line he can fill the A gap instantly and blow this play up. Identify whether the defense is running a 4-3 under or 46 front, since those alignments load the box and take away the dive lane completely. Key the defensive tackles' first step, if they are shooting gaps aggressively on the snap the dive has almost no room to develop. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the middle of the field, a smart user player will sit on this run and trigger downhill the moment the ball is snapped. This play is most effective against light boxes from nickel or dime packages where the defense is prioritizing pass coverage over run support.
Usage Tips
Use this play in short yardage and goal line situations where you need a quick, decisive gain without relying on outside blocking.
Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to Jet Lead Read Option or HB Stretch instead to attack the edge.
Snap the ball quickly against base 4-3 or 4-2 looks since HB Dive punishes defenses that are slow to fill gaps or that stack light boxes for pass coverage.
Pair this play with Quick Slants or RPO Alert Flat in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect the run and cannot sell out to stop the dive up the middle.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap, since there is no lead blocker to clean up penetration.
