Jet Lead Read Option out of Pistol U Off Trips is a run play built around jet motion across the formation with the QB reading the edge defender to decide between keeping the ball or handing off. The offensive line blocks down at the point of attack while the fullback or lead blocker leads through the hole for the ball carrier, and the jet motion man threatens the perimeter to widen the defense's flow. This is a run-first read option, not a pass concept, and the primary read is the QB's eyes on the edge defender (the diagrammed key defender) to determine give or keep, followed by the natural cutback lane if the defense overpursues to the jet motion.
Watch for an unblocked edge defender crashing down hard immediately at the snap, which signals a scrape exchange or contain-focused defense designed to force the give every time. If the defense shows a heavy box with linebackers stacked tight to the line, expect an aggressive run blitz that can blow up the mesh point before the QB reads the option key. Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with safeties staying deep are more vulnerable to this play since they commit fewer defenders to run support near the line. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the jet motion side leave a cutback lane, so watch for lurking defenders sitting inside to jump the keep read. Man coverage on the perimeter combined with a disciplined edge defender who stays home on the QB is the toughest look to beat with this concept.
Use jet motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back to follow the motion man, which tells you whether they are in man or zone.
If the edge defender crashes hard on the mesh point, pull the ball and attack the alley behind the lead blocker with the QB.
This play works best on early downs (1st and 2nd) in run-heavy personnel packages where defenses are likely to stack the box.
Pair this play with Jet Touch Pass or Jet PA Boot from the same set to keep defenses honest on the jet motion and force them to respect both the run and the perimeter pass threat.
Audible into HB Dive or HB Slam if you notice the defense selling out to stop the edge, since those interior runs punish light box counts.
