Breakdown

Jet PA Boot uses jet motion across the backfield to sell the run fake before the quarterback boots outside the pocket off play action. The route concept shows a deep corner/go route from the outside receiver stretching the far boundary, a deep crossing route from the opposite side breaking underneath it, a shallow drag or flat route working underneath from the trips side, and a checkdown/flat option releasing to the sideline at the bottom of the diagram. This is a play-action boot concept designed to attack zone defenses that bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression starting on the deep crosser, working to the underneath drag, and checking down to the flat route if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker and safety rotation immediately after the jet motion snap, since aggressive run fits from linebackers open up the deep crosser for a big gain. Man coverage defenses that trail the crosser and drag routes tightly limit this concept, so look for user defenders sprinting to jump the underneath routes as a sign the boot side flat is the only clean outlet. Cover 3 and other single high shells with zone linebackers who bite on the run fake get exposed by the deep corner route stretching the sideline behind them. Watch for a contain defender or scrape exchange defensive end staying home on the boot side, since a disciplined edge defender can blow up the play before the quarterback clears the pocket. Two high safety shells with disciplined zone drops on the backside can take away the crosser and force the quarterback into the flat checkdown, so be ready to throw underneath quickly instead of forcing the deep read.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are keying run based on personnel and jet motion, since the boot action plays best against defenses that respect the ground game.

Watch pre-snap for single high safety looks or defenses that crash hard on jet sweep motion, as those shells get gashed by the deep crosser and corner combo once the quarterback boots outside.

If the defense shows two high safeties and sits on the boot side flat, hot route the flat/checkdown receiver into a quick out or speed out to beat cornerbacks sitting on the shallow routes.

Pair this play with Jet Touch Pass and Jet Lead Read Option earlier in a series so the defense overcommits to jet motion, making the play-action boot fake even more effective later in the drive.

Roll the pocket with the quarterback on the boot and throw on the move, since staying in the pocket too long lets edge defenders who read through the fake close throwing lanes quickly.
