Breakdown

Jet PA Boot uses jet motion across the backfield to sell the outside run before the QB boots to the opposite edge off play action. From Pistol Trips, the backside receiver runs a deep corner route up the sideline while the middle route breaks underneath it on a deep in, giving the QB a high-low read to that side. On the play side away from the boot, the near receiver runs a shallow drag/flat route while the outside receiver runs a deeper crossing route, giving the QB checkdown options if the boot side is covered. This is a play-action rollout designed to beat man coverage by putting the QB on the move with easy access throws, while the deep corner and crossing combo stresses zone defenders who bite on the run fake.

Defensive Reads

Watch the safety rotation before the snap, two high safeties suggest zone coverage where the boot side deep corner route can be thrown into the void behind underneath defenders. Key the play side linebackers immediately after the snap, if they crash hard on the jet sweep fake, the shallow drag and flat routes will be wide open for an easy completion. Identify man coverage by watching if a defender mirrors the jet motion man across the formation, this tells you the QB should look opposite to the boot side for one on one matchups. Beware of a contain defender staying home on the boot side edge, this is the primary counter that shuts down the rollout by forcing the QB to check down early or take a sack. Look for a delayed blitz off the edge on the boot side, since the QB is rolling toward that pressure, a smart user blitz off that side can undo the whole design if the play side protection does not account for it.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st or 2nd and short to medium) when defenses are keying run to maximize the play action hold on linebackers and safeties.

Check pre-snap for single high safety looks, they tell you the corner route has a soft spot in the deep third if the corner bites on the jet motion.

Use the jet motion as a pre-snap indicator, if the defense follows the motion man aggressively with a linebacker or DB, that confirms man coverage and the boot side deep corner or the crossing route underneath should be open.

Hot route the backside crosser into a deeper dig if you see a lurking linebacker sitting in the shallow zone to avoid a jump throw interception.

Pair this with Jet Touch Pass and Jet Lead Read Option earlier in a series so the defense over-commits to the jet action, setting up the play action boot as a explosive counter-punch.
