Breakdown

PA Boot Over is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Trips that pulls the QB to the boundary while stacking three vertical stems into a deep over concept. The yellow route from the backfield/attached alignment breaks flat outside for a quick checkdown, the middle yellow route runs a deep dig/over that settles across the field, and the red route climbs vertically before cutting toward the sideline as a corner breaker. The lone blue receiver runs a shallow drag underneath to give the QB an immediate outlet off the play fake. Primary read progression starts with the deep red corner route to hold the safety, moves to the middle yellow over route crossing the field, and checks down to the flat and drag combo if the boot gets pressured or the underneath defenders sink too deep.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a cornerback sitting outside with no deep help, this is a green light to trust the corner route on the boot side. Identify if the defense shows Cover 3 with a rolled down safety, since that flat defender can jump the flat route and the drag concept underneath. Key the middle linebacker's drop on the snap, if he sprints to the flat or widens with the boot flow, the over route has a clean throwing lane behind him. Beware of user controlled defenders spying the QB on the rollout, a disciplined spy or contain defender can blow up the play fake and force an early checkdown. Against Cover 2 look for the deep safety shading toward the corner route, which opens the over route sitting underneath the safety and over the linebackers.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs when the run threat is credible so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety tells you the corner route has one on one leverage outside while two high shells mean you should prioritize the middle over route sitting in the voided intermediate zone. Use the flat and drag combo underneath as your answer against blitz heavy calls since the boot action naturally creates an escape lane away from interior pressure. Pair this play with HB Counter or HB Stretch earlier in a series so the play fake sells and defenders bite on the run action, then hit them with PA Boot Over for a big shot. If the corner route gets taken away by a deep half defender, work the over route immediately since it is designed to settle in the same window vacated by underneath zone defenders.
