Breakdown

HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Pistol U Off Trips with 12 personnel, designed to hit the interior gap quickly behind the fullback or lead blocker. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with double team potential at the point of attack while the two trips receivers stay uninvolved as decoys to hold defenders wide. This is a pure run play, not a pass or RPO, and the primary read is the initial gap: the HB should press the mesh point and pick the first crease created by the line, bouncing outside only if the interior is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch the depth of the middle linebacker before the snap, if he is sitting shallow expecting run he can fill the gap fast and blow this up for a minimal gain. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look, since fewer down linemen usually means more initial room for the HB to work through the first level. Key on user controlled defenders flowing downhill immediately after the snap, aggressive user linebackers can be baited into overpursuing if you cut back against the grain. This play struggles against stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz packages sent right up the middle, since there is no lead blocker to clean up extra rushers. Look for safeties creeping into the box pre snap, if both safeties are within eight yards of the line this run has little room and you should consider an audible to a pass concept instead.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or short yardage situations like 3rd and 1 or goal line where defenses expect a stacked box but you want quick vertical push before they can fully commit extra defenders. Check the defensive alignment pre snap for light boxes with only six or seven defenders in the tackle box, since HB Slam thrives against those numbers. If you see a heavy blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill immediately, consider hot routing one of the trips receivers into a quick out or slant to keep the defense honest on the next snap. Pair this play with HB Dive and Inside Zone Split in the same set to keep defenders guessing between one cut zone runs and this quicker hitting dive concept. Use it to set up PA Boot or PA Boot Over later in the series once the defense starts stacking the box to stop the run, since the play action window opens up big off this exact look.
