HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Pistol U Off Trips with 12 personnel, designed to hit the interior gap quickly behind the fullback or TE lead blocker. The offensive line shows a gap scheme up front with the play side blocker climbing to the second level, while the two outside receivers on the isolated side and the trips bunch stay static to hold their defenders and prevent extra defenders from rotating into the box. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the play side A or B gap first, with the HB reading the block on the point defender to decide between cutting inside or bouncing off the initial hole.

Defensive Reads

Identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front with only six or seven in the box, since a light box is the green light for this dive concept. Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and confirm the play side gap is not stacked with extra defenders before the snap.

Use motion or a quick glance at the Mike linebacker depth to identify if the defense is selling run blitz, then adjust protection or check to a different play if the box is loaded.

Pair HB Slam with HB Counter and HB Stretch from this same set so defenses cannot key on one gap or one blocking scheme.

Run this on early downs, particularly first and second and short, when defenses are more likely to play base personnel and light boxes.
