Defensive Reads
Watch the alignment of the flat defender (slot corner or overhang linebacker) before the snap, if he is sitting inside the box count as a run defender you likely have the flat throw available post-snap. Check safety depth, a two-high shell with soft corners usually means the defense is respecting the pass and daring you to run, while a single-high look with stacked box defenders means the flat throw is the higher percentage option. Post-snap, key the play-side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard to the run fake the flat window opens up instantly for an easy pitch and catch. This play beats zone blitz packages and aggressive run fits where defenders overcommit to the box, but struggles against disciplined defenders who stay square and read the mesh point. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the flat or sinking into a shallow zone lurk, since a smart human defender can jump the flat route and turn it into a pick six if the QB throws on autopilot without confirming the leverage.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count before the snap to confirm whether you are getting a run or pass look, since this play lives and dies on numbers advantage.
If the defense shows five or more in the box with the flat defender sitting flat footed, key the run and let the RB work the inside zone lanes.
If the slot or flat defender crashes down hard on run action, immediately pull and hit the flat route for a quick, low risk gain, especially against aggressive run blitz packages.
This play pairs extremely well with HB Dive and HB Slam in the same set since all three sell the same zone run action, keeping linebackers honest and setting up the flat throw later in a series.
Best used on early downs (first and ten, second and short) where defenses are more likely to sell out against the run, and can be chained with Read Option or Jet Lead Read Option to keep the defense guessing on similar backfield action.
