Orbit PA DBL Cross is a play-action pass out of Pistol U Off Trips with 12 personnel that uses orbit motion across the formation before the fake handoff to sell run action and hold the linebackers. Off the play fake, the concept builds two crossing routes at different depths: the yellow route runs a deep dig that breaks across the field high, and the red route runs a shallower crosser underneath it, creating a natural high low crossing combo, while the blue route checks down into the flat as an outlet and the light blue route works from the backfield out to the sideline as a safety valve. This is a man beater concept, since the two crossers stress man defenders through natural picks and rubs while the flat and swing routes punish man defenders who try to trail speed in space. The primary read progression starts with the deep yellow dig, works down to the red crosser sitting underneath it, and finishes with the blue and light blue outlets if both crossers are covered.
Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: a single high safety signals man or cover 3 which this crossing combo exploits, while two deep safeties suggest cover 2 or cover 4 that can squeeze the deep dig. Watch the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting the run fake they will struggle to carry the deep yellow crosser across the field. After the snap, key any user controlled defender flowing with the orbit motion, this reveals man coverage and tells you the crossers will win against trailing defenders. Look for a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, this is the biggest threat to the red route and can jump the underneath crosser if the quarterback stares it down. Zone coverage with a hard flat corner and squatting curl to flat defender can undercut the blue checkdown route, so be ready to reset the progression back to the deep dig if the flat is taken away.
Use the orbit motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone, if the motion defender runs across the formation with the receiver it confirms man coverage and tells you to lean on the crossers.
Take a shot at the deep yellow dig first against single high safety looks since the crossing traffic underneath will hold linebackers and free up the window over the middle.
Hot route the red crosser to sit down in soft spots against zone shells if you see the underneath defenders sinking into passing lanes instead of chasing man to man.
Sequence this play after HB Counter or HB Dive from the same personnel group so the play action fake actually freezes linebackers, then come back to Orbit PA DBL Cross once run tendencies are established.
Use this on early downs or manageable third and medium situations since the deep dig read takes time to develop and you need a clean pocket from the blocking scheme up front.
