Breakdown

Strong Power is a downhill gap scheme run out of the Pistol formation in the U Off Trips set with 12 personnel on the field. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down with a puller from the backside guard while the HB takes a lead step to follow the double team at the point of attack, with both TEs releasing vertically to occupy the second level defenders. This is a pure run play with no route combos or RPO elements attached, designed to move the pile and create a hole between the tackle and TE with the HB reading the first puller as the primary key.

Defensive Reads

Watch for stacked box fronts with three or four down linemen and linebackers crowding the line, this alignment can clog the power lane before the puller arrives. A single high safety look invites an extra defender into the box, so key the free safety depth before the snap to gauge run support. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 1 with linebackers sitting flat footed, the double team and TE releases should win the point of attack. Man beaters do not apply here since this is strictly a run design, but watch for slanting defensive linemen who can shoot the gap and disrupt the double team. Aggressive user blitzers flowing hard from the edge can beat the puller to the hole, so be ready to bounce the HB outside if the interior gets clogged.

Usage Tips

Use this on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a physical, gap-controlled run to pick up two or three tough yards.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box with two safeties still deep this play loses its numbers advantage so consider audibling to a passing concept.

Pair this with Jet Touch Pass or PA Boot out of the same formation to keep defenders honest against the run action and force linebackers to respect the fake.

User the backside linebacker after the snap to seal off backdoor pursuit, since the CPU blockers can occasionally whiff on the puller's angle.

Run this on early downs to set up Read Option or HB Counter later in the series once the defense starts crashing hard to stop the power concept.
