Strong Power out of Pistol U Off Trips is a gap scheme power run that pulls the backside guard to lead through the playside A or B gap while the offensive line down blocks to seal the frontside. The HB takes a slight lead step before pressing downhill off his puller's track, reading the kickout or lead block on the point of attack defender. This is a run play designed to overpower the front with double teams at the point of attack, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the pulling guard's block to decide between the A gap, B gap, or bouncing outside off the edge.
Watch for stacked box fronts with the safety creeping down pre-snap, this alignment can clog both interior gaps and force a negative play. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 under or over front since the shifted defensive tackle changes which gap the pulling guard needs to seal. Key the playside linebacker's depth at the snap, if he scrapes fast and fills the B gap the HB needs to bounce the run outside off the edge. Look for edge defenders squeezing down hard against the double TE look, this can spill the run and requires the HB to cut back against the grain. Man coverage shells with linebackers in run fits usually leave a cleaner interior lane, while zone blitz packages that send an extra rusher off the edge can beat this play if the puller whiffs on the kickout block.
Run this out of 12 personnel on early downs when you want to establish tempo and set up play action shots later in the drive.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box this play has a clean numbers advantage.
Use the pulling guard as your primary blocking key, the HB should press the hole hard and trust the lead block instead of guessing early.
Pair this with PA Boot or PA Boot Over from the same formation so linebackers keep respecting the run fit and bite on play action fakes off similar mesh points.
Best called on first and ten or short yardage third down since the tight double TE personnel signals run and forces the defense to commit extra bodies to the box.
