Wing Pair

Overview

Singleback Wing Pair is the heavy personnel answer inside a formation family that usually leans on three and four receiver spacing. The 13 personnel grouping puts one back behind the quarterback with three tight ends on the field, and the alignment stacks a wing tight end just off the line next to an inline tight end while keeping a single receiver isolated to the other side. That structure gives you an extra gap to attack in the run game without going under center, which is why the play list is loaded with gap and zone concepts: 0 1 Trap, 26 Duo, Power O, HB Counter Wk, Mtn Counter Str, HB Inside Zone, HB Stretch, and Wide Zone Wk all run out of the same look.

What separates Wing Pair from the standard Singleback spread sets is the play action menu attached to that run threat. PA Boot Lt, PA Boot RT, PA Ctr Shot, PA Sprint HB Flat, PA TE Seam, PA X Burst Cross, and PA X Burst Heavy all sell the same downhill run mesh before releasing tight ends into voided middle windows. Defenses that commit a safety down to handle 13 personnel end up defending seam and crosser concepts with linebackers, and that is the matchup this set is built to manufacture. The Gadget tag also shows up in Jet 6 Drive, Stretch WR Screen, and Raiders Vertical, so you can flip from grinding runs to misdirection without changing formation.

The isolated single receiver is the real leverage point. With three tight ends drawing box defenders and zone coverage rotating toward the strength, your X gets one on one looks on the backside, and PA X Burst Heavy or Raiders Vertical lets you take a shot at that leverage. Meanwhile the RPO package (RPO Alert Dive Smoke and RPO Dive Alert Smoke) reads the box count and gives you an easy pitch to the isolated side whenever the defense stacks against the run. Short yardage and red zone situations are where this set is most dangerous, with Mtn HB Plunge, Y Stick Heavy, Mtn Spot Heavy, and RZ PA Crossers giving you compressed field answers.

Strengths

  • The wing plus inline tight end pairing creates two extra run gaps, so 26 Duo, Power O, and Mtn Counter Str force the defense to declare a front before the snap, and you can audible to the opposite run concept if the box is overloaded.
  • Play action off the heavy run look (PA Boot Lt, PA Boot RT, PA Ctr Shot, PA TE Seam) pulls linebackers forward and opens the seam and intermediate crossers that they normally cover, which punishes single high shells.
  • The isolated single receiver gets consistent one on one leverage because zone coverage rotates to the three tight end side, making PA X Burst Heavy, PA X Burst Cross, and Raiders Vertical strong iso shot plays.
  • Spacing, Mtn Spot, Y Stick, and Dragon Spacing give you flat and hook floods that beat Cover 3 and Cover 4 without asking your tight ends to win downfield, and hot routing the wing to a slant or drag turns any of them into clean man beaters.
  • RPO Alert Dive Smoke and RPO Dive Alert Smoke let you attack an overloaded box with a free perimeter throw, so stacking the run does not actually stop you.

Weaknesses

  • Only one true receiver on the field means you have very little vertical stress, so a user safety can sit on the isolated side and take away your only real shot concept.
  • Tight ends are slower releasing off the line, so overload blitzes and nano pressure to the weak side get home before the deeper play action concepts (PA Ctr Shot, RZ PA Crossers) develop.
  • Play action plays freeze your lineman assignments and remove your quick escape, so if the opponent uses a linebacker or edge blitzer you cannot block, you eat sacks with no checkdown ready.
  • Defenses can simply bring in heavy personnel of their own and man up your tight ends with linebackers who have adequate coverage ratings, neutralizing the matchup edge you were trying to create.
  • The formation telegraphs run on early downs, so experienced opponents will run press man with a robber sitting in the middle to jump Y Stick, Spacing, and any drag concept.

Usage Tips

Run this set on first and second down to establish HB Inside Zone, 26 Duo, or Wide Zone Wk, then punish the crowded box with PA Boot RT or PA Sprint HB Flat off the identical run mesh.

Read the safety count pre snap: if you see two high, hammer the run game and Mtn HB Plunge; if you see single high with a walked down safety, go to PA TE Seam or PA X Burst Cross to attack the vacated middle.

Motion the wing tight end across the formation to identify man versus zone, then hot route him to a drag or slant against man and leave the play art alone against zone.

In the red zone, live in Mtn Spot Heavy, Y Stick Heavy, and RZ PA Crossers, and hot route the isolated receiver to a fade if you see press coverage with no help over the top.

Keep Stretch WR Screen and Jet 6 Drive in your rotation once your opponent starts crowding the box, because the Gadget looks reset his pursuit angles and slow down aggressive user defenders.
