Raiders Vertical out of Singleback Wing Pair sends four receivers vertical to stress every level of the defense while the drag route underneath clears out low zones and gives the quarterback a checkdown against pressure. Both wing tight ends release into vertical seams from in tight alignment, the outside receivers push straight up the boundary on go routes, and the backside slot runs a shallow drag across the field. This is a classic four verts concept built as a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read starting on the seam route to the play side, working to the opposite go route, and coming down to the drag if the deep windows are covered.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre-snap, since this play is built to attack the deep middle void created when both safeties bail to the numbers on four verts. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks with the seam route it signals Cover 3 and the quarterback should look to the opposite vertical or the drag. Track any user lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone, that defender is the biggest threat to jumping the seam route and baiting a turnover throw. Recognize Cover 2 shells by corner alignment at the line, if corners are playing soft outside leverage the go routes on the perimeter will have room to work up the sideline before the safety can get over top. Man coverage with a blitz is the primary counter to this concept, so if you see the corners in press alignment with extra rushers showing, get the ball out quickly to the drag as the built in answer.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap glance at both safeties before the snap, if they are showing two high with depth this play is designed to split them with the seam routes. Hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route or a spot route if you see man coverage across the board, since the underlying shallow drag alone will not separate versus tight man. Use this play on early downs or in two minute situations where you want to test a Cover 3 shell with the deep seams before the free safety can rotate over. Pair this call with Y Stick or Dragon Spacing earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then come back to Raiders Vertical to hit the seam behind them. Against a single high safety, key on the seam to the numbers advantage side first since that safety cannot help both seams at once.
