Mtn HB Plunge is a downhill run play out of Singleback Wing Pair with a wing back motion tag added pre-snap to adjust the box count. The diagram shows a tight interior blocking surface with the offensive line covered from tackle to tackle and the fullback/wing looking to seal the point of attack while the HB takes a quick, direct plunge path into the A or B gap. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and gap-shooting fronts, with the primary read being the play side double team at the line before the HB presses the hole and reads the first hole-filling linebacker.
Watch the pre-snap box count immediately after the motion, since an extra defender crashing down signals a run blitz or gap exchange look. Key the play side linebacker depth, if he is sitting shallow and square he is reading the mesh point and can fill the plunge lane quickly. User the middle linebacker or run-support safety to close the interior gap before the HB can get vertical. Watch for defensive tackles shooting gaps rather than reading blocks, since a well-timed A gap blitz can blow this play up before the fullback seals the hole. Man coverage on the wing with no help over the top often means the defense is selling out to stop the run, which opens up play-action shots off this same look.
Use the pre-snap motion tag to identify whether the defense is in man or zone by watching if a defender follows the wing across the formation.
This play hits fastest between the tackles, so call it on short yardage or goal line situations where you need a highly reliable gap push.
If the defense shows a stacked box with 8 or more defenders, check to a perimeter run or PA Boot Lt to keep the defense honest.
Pair this play with HB Dive and Power O in the same set so the defense cannot sit on one blocking scheme, then mix in HB Counter Wk once the linebackers start crashing hard downhill.
Snap the ball quickly after the motion settles to prevent the defense from rotating an extra defender into the box.
