PA X Burst Cross runs a play-action fake out of Singleback Wing Pair with 13 personnel, using the run fake to hold the second and third level before working a deep crossing route from the boundary receiver, a deep in from the slot, a corner route breaking outside from the wing, and a short drag underneath from the other side of the formation. The X receiver stems vertically before breaking across the middle on a deep cross, the slot runs a dig style in-route that settles behind the linebackers, and the wing releases on a corner route that stretches the numbers while a shallow drag occupies the underneath zone. This is a play-action man beater built to attack linebackers biting on the run fake, with the primary read progression going deep cross first, then working down to the in-route, and finally checking down to the short drag if the coverage stays deep.
Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the play fake, if they bite immediately the deep cross and dig behind them will be wide open on your first read. Identify single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 before the snap, this play is designed to exploit those coverages by hitting the crosser and corner route in the voids created by the run fake. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, the corner route from the wing becomes tougher to complete, so shift your progression toward the underneath drag and in-route instead. Key on user controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since they can undercut the crossing route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. If the defense brings a blitz off the edge, get the ball out quickly to the shallow drag or hot route adjustment since the play-action drop takes extra time to develop and leaves the quarterback exposed.
Use this play on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to respect the run fake and bite on linebacker flow.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the play-action element loses value, so consider audibling to a quicker hitting concept instead.
If the defense shows single high safety with linebackers stacked in the box, this is your green light since the run fake will pull those linebackers and open the deep cross behind them.
Hot route the shallow drag into a quick out or flat route against man coverage to give yourself an instant answer versus press corners who jump the underneath routes.
Pair this play with 26 Duo or HB Inside Zone earlier in the drive so the defense respects the run fake, then come back to PA X Burst Cross once linebackers start crashing downhill on run reads.
