Primary read progression starts with the drive route crossing underneath, works to the shallow crosser, and checks down to the HB flat route if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, since Cover 4 shells are the primary vulnerability here as the vertical routes stretch both safeties and open the drive route in the intermediate zone. Key the middle linebacker depth and drop angle after the snap, because a shaded MLB who sits on the drive route can undercut the crossing concept and force a checkdown. Watch for user lurk defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lane, as a smart user drop can jump the drive route and bait a turnover. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 6 with a hard flat defender, the HB flat/wheel route becomes low value, so lean on the crossing routes instead. Recognize blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the vertical clear-outs take time to develop and the quarterback needs a fast built-in answer like the drive route or HB check to avoid a negative play.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium or third and short when you expect zone coverage, especially Cover 4 or Cover 3 shells that leave the intermediate crossing lanes open.
Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since the two vertical clear-outs are designed to hold both safeties and open the drive route underneath.
If the defense shows man coverage or a nano blitz look, hot route the drive runner into a quicker option or check to the HB flat route immediately since the crossing route takes time to develop.
