PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint out concept from Singleback Wing Pair that puts the QB on the move to the strong side flat. Off the fake, the outside WR runs a deep dig that breaks in around 15 yards while the inside receiver stems vertically up the seam past 20 yards, stretching the field on the backside. To the flat side, the HB releases on a quick flat route while a receiver runs a shallow drag/out toward the sideline, giving the QB an easy checkdown on the run. This is a play-action sprint design built to attack zone defenses and overaggressive run fits, with the QB rollout naturally progressing from the flat route to the deep dig and then the vertical seam if the pocket and coverage hold up.
Watch for Cover 3 zone drops with the flat defender sinking too deep, which opens a throwing lane to the shallow drag/out route for an easy completion. If the deep half safety to the play side stays flat footed on the play fake, the vertical seam route has a high probability of breaking open behind the second level. Man coverage defenders who bite hard on the run fake will lose leverage on the deep dig route, especially if the corner is playing off and reacts late to the crosser. Watch inside linebackers on run blitzes or nano blitz packages. If they crash hard on the fake, the HB flat route becomes uncovered immediately since the alley defender is gone. Disguised zone blitzes with a corner rolling down into the flat area from depth can jump the shallow drag route, so read the flat defender's depth pre-snap before committing to the quick throw.
Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and medium when defenses are honoring run fits from Wing Pair personnel, since the play action fake plays off outside zone or duo looks in this set.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties. Single high shells with aggressive linebackers flowing to run action are the best trigger for the sprint since it pulls defenders out of position.
If you see Cover 3 sky or Cover 3 buzz, key the flat defender. If he sits, hit the deep dig sitting down in the vacated hole behind him for a chunk gain.
Pair this call with 24 Zone Open or HB Inside Zone earlier in a drive to sell the run action tendency, then dial up PA Sprint HB Flat once linebackers start cheating up on run keys.
Roll the QB with intent to throw the flat route quickly against blitz-heavy defenses, since sprinting out naturally helps escape interior pressure and buys time against edge rushers who overrun the pocket.
