Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker pre-snap, if they are lined up wide or crashing hard down the line the cutback lane opens up quickly. Check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety cheating toward the play side signals extra run support and should push you toward a cutback read. Post-snap, key the flow of the middle linebacker, if he overruns the play side gap chasing the stretch action, cut the ball back immediately. This run struggles against gap or man alignment fronts with disciplined edge defenders who stay square and force the ball back inside into pursuit. Beware user controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing the alley, a smart user linebacker sitting in the cutback lane can blow this play up before the back gets going.
