Breakdown

24 Zone Open is an outside zone run out of Singleback Wing Pair with 13 personnel, showing a tight formation with a wing attached to the offensive line and an off-set fullback or H-back in the backfield. The offensive line flows laterally to the play side with reach blocks, aiming to seal the edge and let the HB press the line before choosing a cutback lane based on defensive flow. This is a run play designed to hit off tackle first, with the primary read being the play side edge defender and second level flow, allowing the back to bounce outside or cut back inside depending on how the defense reacts.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker pre-snap, if they are lined up wide or crashing hard down the line the cutback lane opens up quickly. Check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety cheating toward the play side signals extra run support and should push you toward a cutback read. Post-snap, key the flow of the middle linebacker, if he overruns the play side gap chasing the stretch action, cut the ball back immediately. This run struggles against gap or man alignment fronts with disciplined edge defenders who stay square and force the ball back inside into pursuit. Beware user controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing the alley, a smart user linebacker sitting in the cutback lane can blow this play up before the back gets going.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a run heavy personnel look to keep base defenses honest and prevent nickel or dime substitutions that hurt your blocking numbers on the edge.

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check for an extra man crashing down from depth, since outside zone loses value against overloaded fronts with no cutback support.

Use the HB vision cone and let the back press the line of scrimmage before committing to a lane, patience is key against aggressive linebackers who flow too fast.

Pair this with HB Inside Zone and Power O from the same set so linebackers cannot key run direction based on backfield action alone.

Ideal on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want to stay balanced and set up play action shots like PA Boot Lt or PA TE Seam later in the series.
