Breakdown

Mtn Spot Heavy is a Spot concept pass play out of Singleback Wing Pair with a pre-snap motion man crossing the backfield before the snap. The route diagram shows a corner route breaking outside from the inline tag, an out route sitting underneath from the slot, a shallow drag crossing the field low, and a checkdown flat route releasing to the boundary, giving you a classic Spot combo with a vertical shot layered on top. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 2 by stretching the flat-to-corner defender vertically while the shallow drag and out settle into the underneath voids, with the primary read progression going corner route first for the explosive shot, then working down to the flat and drag as the checkdowns against tighter zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety cheating toward the corner route side signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, which tells you to expect man coverage traffic underneath Watch the motion man closely, if a linebacker or defensive back mirrors the motion across the field that is a man coverage indicator and you should attack the drag route immediately after the catch Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender sitting in the deep third or hovering as a lurk threat over the shallow drag, since a smart user will jump the underneath crossing routes and bait the quarterback into a pick This play struggles against a hard Cover 4 or Cover 2 Man shell with safeties rotating over the top of the corner route, since that takes away the primary shot and forces you into low-value checkdowns Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge can disrupt the timing of the corner route developing, so if you see a nano blitz alignment pre-snap, get the ball out quickly to the flat or drag instead of holding for the deep shot

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly seeing man coverage and should look to hot route the drag into a deeper option

Against Cover 3 shells, trust the corner route to win over the top since the deep third defender has to respect the flat threat underneath, this is your explosive play call

Call this on early downs to keep the defense honest before dialing up Y Stick Heavy or Dragon Spacing from the same set, since the concepts share spacing and force linebackers to defend multiple levels

On third and medium, prioritize the out route and shallow drag since they settle into easy completion windows against both zone drops and man coverage rubs

Pair this play with PA X Burst Heavy in your sequencing since both attack similar landmarks off play action, keeping linebackers frozen and opening throwing lanes underneath
