PA TE Seam is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Pair that sells the run fake before attacking the middle of the field. Off the play fake, the TE releases up the seam as the primary vertical threat while the backside receiver runs a deep comeback and the two outlets to the play side break outward toward the sideline, one on a corner route and one on a flat route, stretching the defense horizontally and vertically at once. The primary read progression starts with the TE seam, works to the deep comeback on the backside if the safety squeezes down on the seam, and checks down to the shallow outlet routes if the play-action holds the linebackers long enough.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker at the snap: if he steps up hard on run action, the TE seam window opens immediately. Identify single high safety shells pre-snap, since Cover 1 or Cover 3 with one deep defender leaves the seam vulnerable if the linebacker bites on the fake. Key the flat defender and corner on the play side, because if they squeeze the outlet routes the corner route behind them can come open late. Beware Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting deep and reading the QB's eyes, as they can sink onto the seam and undercut the throw. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the TE seam or a linebacker sitting in a lurk zone, since a disciplined defender who does not bite on the run fake can jump the route.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to keep the run fake believable and to freeze the linebackers and safeties before they can sink into the seam window.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the TE seam has a bigger throwing window because one safety has to respect run action.
If you see man coverage on the TE, throw the seam early and with anticipation before the linebacker can get a hand on him at the top of his route.
Use the backside comeback as your answer versus zone drops or Cover 3, since it settles into the void created when the corner bails deep.
Pair this with 26 Duo or HB Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the linebackers start biting on run action, then dial up PA TE Seam to punish overaggressive run fits.
