The primary read progression starts with the deep shot route off the play fake, works down to any intermediate crosser or dig, and ends with the checkdown or dump-off if the safety stays deep and the shot window closes.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety at snap, since that tells you the deep shot route has a one on one matchup down the middle with no help over the top. If the safety stays deep at the snap and does not bite on the run fake, abort the deep shot read immediately and work down to the intermediate or checkdown option. Identify linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers crashing down on run reads open up the crossing routes and shot route behind them. Cover 3 with a robber underneath or a defender spying the middle of the field can jump the shot route, so if you see a linebacker sitting in a deep middle hole post snap, check down instead of forcing the throw. Beware of a delayed blitz off the edge or a user rushing the middle since the play fake takes time to develop and the quarterback is vulnerable if protection breaks down before the shot route clears the second level.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties, since obvious passing downs kill the effectiveness of the play fake.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties rotate down into the box before the snap that is your green light since it signals a heavier run bias that the play-action can exploit.

Hot route the underneath option to a shallow drag or flat route if you anticipate a blitz, giving yourself a quick outlet against nano blitz pressure up the middle.

Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the defense keys the center run action and starts stepping up sooner, which is exactly what makes the shot route dangerous.

Use play action rollouts like PA Boot Lt or PA Boot RT in the same series to keep the defense honest on run fakes to different directions before dialing this one back up the gut.
