PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Wing Pair that pulls the QB to the left edge behind a fake handoff, giving him a run pass option feel off the boot action. The route concept sends a deep corner route from the inline tight end up top, an over route sitting behind it working from the backside across the field, and a shallow drag underneath crossing the formation to the flat, while the fullback releases to the flat on the play side to give the QB a checkdown. This is a man beater on the crossing routes with a natural high low read, and the primary progression is deep corner first, then the over route settling behind it, and finally the shallow drag or flat route as the checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap identify single high shells since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the flat and shallow drag vulnerable to the boot action. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow or flat footed linebackers signal they respected the run fake and opened a throwing lane underneath. Post-snap track the play side safety, if he sinks late to the corner route landing spot the QB needs to move off that read quickly to the over route. Beware of contain defenders and edge blitzers who stay home on the boot side, disciplined edge play or a spy can collapse the pocket before routes develop. Cover 2 with a hard flat defender can jump the shallow drag and flat combo, so the QB must be ready to climb the ladder to the deep corner instead of forcing the underneath throw.
Usage Tips
Roll out fully with the QB and use the boot action to buy time against edge rushers before you commit to a throw.
Read the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they bite hard on the play fake the shallow drag and flat route will be wide open underneath.
Against man coverage look immediately for the deep corner route to win on a rub or natural leverage advantage against a trailing corner or safety.
Use hot routes to convert the shallow drag into a quick out if you are facing aggressive man coverage on the perimeter that jumps the crosser.
Pair this play with 24 Zone Open or HB Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the run action sells and the boot fake actually freezes second level defenders.
